The New Wave Of Local Design > AFIK NAIM
by Itay Blaish | 27.02.14Every year, a few months after the Design School’s graduation, interesting designers start to pop out from the mass of graduates.
How do they pop out you ask? Well, one will begin to be recognized for their unique patterns and styles within party posters, concert flyers, newspaper illustrations or other various kinds of events all around town.
When a young designer has such a distinct style and personal language, you immediately know they will go far. Afik Naim, Graphic Designer from Tel-Aviv-Jaffa, is one of these examples and I had to chance to meet with him and learn more about him and his work.
Afik Moved to Tel Aviv 2 years ago from Jerusalem after graduating with Bachelors Degree in Visual Communication from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. After finishing school, Afik began working at Ori Succary’s studio, where he had a life changing experience. “Working with Ori showed me a new approach to design, art and culture”.
After working at Ori’s for a year, he worked in the Hi-tech industry for only a few months until he decided to become an independent designer. Since then, his work has been published all around the city, where I have bumped into many designs for the music and club culture industry such as Kztradio, The Pasaz, Vaadat Charigim and Neshef Halal, which he received a local award.
Afik’s inspirations are derived from many things during the process including fine arts, experimental music, a variety of blogs and cat videos. For him, when approaching a new document, it is important to set ground rules in order to stay focused. Of course it is okay to break those rules throughout the process but you must set your mind to it before you start. Design is just a decoration for a bigger plan, though we designers tend to forget that and become perfectionists.
“Saying that, I do think that working with the music industry and club culture is an awesome playground for designers and a whole lot of fun.”
